During a conversation the other day at the hip Middlesex Lounge, a notable local chanteuse expressed frustration at GQ’s rating of Boston’s fashion sense as the worst in the country. She explained that to her mind, fashion in Boston is best exemplified by a select group among the Boston rock scene. Parlour Bells are a perfect example of this sensibility; even the band’s T-shirt has been rumored to be useful in the ancient and subtle art of seduction.
Originally the duo of Glenn di Benedetto and Nate Leavitt, they have filled out with an all-star lineup for live performances. They recently had some fun in an internet experiment where they solicited remixes of their song “Heavy Dream” from their debut LP Heart Beatings; the first two of these remixes are available on their web site. This event marks the birthday of frontman Goddamn Glenn and you can be sure there will be some surprises. If there ever were a band made for the intimate Lizard Lounge, this is the band.
Do Not Forsake Me Oh My Darling have been taking the internet by storm with their video Episode 1: Arrival which astoundingly recreates the opening of the seminal 1960s TV show The Prisoner, each shot painstakingly reproduced. This is perfect since that show is an inspiration for their songs, along with the darker streams of rock running from The Velvet Underground to PJ Harvey. Even more perfectly, this show will feature a premiere of their new video, which has an online teaser available for your edification. Drummer/vocalist Sophia Cacciola consistently conjures up archetypical female power. Bassist Michael J. Epstein makes inventive use of tones in this role, one of his many and sundry musical hats. Their sharing the bill with Parlour Bells is a special occasion indeed, since the members of DNFOMD co-star with Goddamn Glenn in the fledgeling TV Show Special Friends. The three have also recently collaborated on a cover version of the Eurythmics’ classic Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This); we went ahead and posted the youtube clip below, and you have until Saturday to download the mp3.
The show will start off with an appearance by the sultry Merrily James who has been collecting critical acclaim of late, so get there early.
