C.D. On Songs: Christa Renee Band // "Slave"

I like when we can expand our scope past the 617 area code into different area codes and – gasp – different states. The Christa Renee Band hails from New Hampshire, Connecticut, Massachusetts and all points in between. They bring their trans-New England sound to McGann’s tomorrow night, so you might want to see to it that you are also there. So you can hear them.

This song’s slinky, sneaky nature sort of slithers through your stereo speakers and directly into your ears. Maybe it’s the all-natural insistence of the reggae-licious upbeats. Or are those offbeats? Whatever they are, they count of the “ands” instead of the numbers like a champion, and they keep “Slave” sneaking down the hallways and around the corners.

Both percussive instrument sounds and nonpercussive ones keep up the sneaky sensations, from the quick swipes on the guitar to the “sneak-sneak-sneak-peeeeeek-peeeeeek” line on the old tonewheel orgran. The organ’s short, quick bursts of upper harmonic brightness give “Slave” quick flashes of juice, which burst out and then immediately settle back for another shift count of four (complete with the aforementioned sets of “and”).

A furtive vocal sidles up to us, almost a little too close so that she is singing almost directly in our ear. This vocal isn’t overpowering; rather it sneaks up on us under some cloak of invisibility and it like “Oh hey, here I am!” all of a sudden. Christa Renee’s smooth vocal delivery matches in perfectly with the sleek silk of the song’s arrangement. The vocal adds a bit of echoey warmth to the mix, making us realize that maybe it’s not sneaking up on us – it just wants us to sneak along with it.

Want to submit your band’s song to C.D. On Songs?
To be reviewed in a C.D. On Songs column, please:
*Be a Boston-based band/artist.
*Email a single mp3/m4a/etc. (or a download link to one) to cdonsongs (at) gmail (dot) com, with the subject line “C.D. on Songs” (DO NOT send us a bunch of songs and make us pick, we will ignore you). We require a file – not a streaming link.
*Include album cover art if you have any. If you don’t, a band photo or logo is acceptable.
*Tell us when you want to see it! Give us the date of your show and we’ll make sure it runs as close as possible to that day. No kidding.

We will assume that we have your permission to make the song downloadable on Boston Band Crush (readers will want to hear it, after all). If that’s not ok with you, say so and provide us with a link to the song on an embeddable player like ReverbNation – something we can include in the post (and not just link to).
