Aaron Rosenthal is a keyboardist/songwriter with This Blue Heaven. In between penning pop tunes, he also works as a composer, arranger, accompanist, organist, and music teacher.
BBC: What Boston rockers, past or present, would you most like to have a One Night Band with?
AR: I’d love to be in a ONB with Mission of Burma’s Clint Conley . That guy’s a hook-writing magician. Or Mike Gordon of Phish. His collaborations with Leo Kottke are like musical butter. Have you heard their version of Sweet Emotion?!?
BBC: What Boston rockers, past or present, would you most fear having a One Night Band with?
AR: My biggest fear is that I’ll get placed in a band with Leesa from Naked on Roller Skates. She tends to crack me up to the point where I fail to keep my game face on.
BBC: What is your normal song or part writing process? Will writing three songs in a single day drastically differ from your usual approach to creating music?
AR: I usually write at the piano, and the best songwriting for me happens when I sit down with a clear, decisive thought or feeling that I need to express. So, I try to start with that and build the song from there with the instrumental parts being determined and written later once it’s easier to see what the song needs.
I’ve written 2-3 songs in a single session before, but then they almost always go through major editing, usually with the help of Stu Dietz, who has an ear for detail that can blow a person’s mind, especially in the recording studio. So, yeah, I’ve never done anything like ONB’s hyper-quick turnaround from birth of a song to performance. I’m excited to see what that creates.
BBC: What Boston band do you have the biggest crush on right now?
AR: Vary Lumar
