Lou Paniccia has been playing drums around Boston for the past 10 years. Lou plays mostly with indie rock bands though for a few years he left the indie rock world in order to fulfill his dream of playing with a Frank Zappa tribute band. Currently Lou can be seen rocking out on stage with Boston’s indie pop sensation Oranjuly.
BBC: What Boston rockers, past or present, would you most like to have a One Night Band with?
LP: Lets see, I think my dream One Night Band would be Ric Ocasek (The Cars), Tom Scholz (Boston), with Mikey Welsh (Weezer) on bass and me on drums.
BBC: What Boston rockers, past or present, would you most fear having a One Night Band with?
LP: Anyone from Dropkick Murphys. I’m not Irish and I didn’t grow up in Boston so I just don’t really get it.
BBC: What is your normal song or part writing process? Will writing three songs in a single day drastically differ from your usual approach to creating music?
LP: Being a drummer I generally stay out of debates about chord changes and melody lines. When it comes to drum parts I start by putting the back beat in different places to see what feels best and then figure out what cymbals I want to use. Then I just rinse and repeat for each section of the song. The finishing touch is finding the right transitions to stitch the different sections together.
I’m actually used to writing drum parts for multiple songs in a short time, but that’s because I tend to work with songwriters who come to me with nearly complete song ideas. It’ll be interesting to see what happens when I’m thrown into the songwriting process from square 1.
BBC: What Boston band do you have the biggest crush on right now?
LP: It’s too hard to pick one so I’ll name a few Boston bands I’ve been digging lately. Stereogrove, Roman Traffic, Spirit Kid, Mmoss, Points North, Thick As Thieves, The Radio Says and many many more.
