Show Crush: Bring The Knife (Record Release) / GOZU / JBVDLP / Birch Hill Dam at the Middle East Upstairs Saturday

Bring The Knife will be celebrating the release of their first 7″/CD at the Middle East upstairs this Saturday.  Duncan Wilder Johnson could be the most dynamic frontman on the Boston scene.  He spends about half of each show in the air, jumping off or on stage, around the audience, or just floating there for a second; when he’s not in the air he might bust out a slo-mo pop and lock or a moonwalk.  This man does not need dance lessons.  Of course he will tell anyone that he’s just doing what he decided he wanted to do after seeing the Boston band Sam Black Church in his impressionable youth.  Duncan is just as energetic off-stage, having produced the monumental Workaholica project involving 2 bands and a spoken word release a while back. The recording was produced by local maestro Ethan Dussault at the fabled New Alliance studio.  Their second video for the tune “Werewolf Fuckdown” was the subject of a BBC video crush.

Small stone recording artists Gozu have been doing very well for themselves, and have some exciting things coming up, like playing a Small Stone showcase in Chicago on Oct. 1, and gearing up for a vinyl release party later in October with some obscure band called what?  Helmet?  Pretty soon the London club called The Gaff will start telling everyone they named it after singer Marc Gaffney. They’ll be blasting the audience to get them ready for the Bring The Knife assault.

Jack Burton vs. David Lo-Pan rival DNFOMD and MJEML in terms of local bands commonly referred to as acronyms, theirs being JBVDLP. They also rival Bring The Knife in family-oriented song titles such as “Candice and Martha and the Afterschool Special About Ecstasy (Teenage Suicide…Don’t Do It)” and “If You Want to Be Remembered as a Rebel Leader, Don’t Wear a Gold Bikini”. Nice!

Birch Hill Dam will open the proceedings with their trademark crunch and maybe a surprise cover tune.
