This Saturday the mighty Drug War will return, along with some very special guests, for a performance at SweeTree Ink at 22 Rugg Road in Allston Rock City. This will also be a wake of sorts for SweeTree Ink and the building it’s housed in, which is being torn down.
Many people know of Dave Tree’s bands Superpower, Blow Your Face Out (a J. Geils tribute band that once had Mr. Peter Wolf sit in with them) and Tree (who played some amazing reunion shows at the Middle East downstairs and at the Freedom rally on Boston Common, where Dave asked 50,000 kids to give him the finger at the same time – when I asked him why he did that later, he joked “I wanted to feel important”). Well, being given the finger by 50,000 kids might be a little intimidating to think about, but Dave has seen greater challenges onstage. Once Drug War played at an obscure place in a seedy part of town, where none other than the late great Seth Putnam of A.C. was in the front row, heckling. That was the greatest heckling I’ve ever seen before or since. But Dave still managed to own the room, which should not be a surprise to anyone who’s seen him onstage. After the show, Dave and Seth hung out like old friends, inexplicably to some that were in attendance. Drug War is full of other rock stars as well. Jeff Turlik (Stompbox, Milligram, Blue Man Group), Keller McGuiness (Anchorset), Darryl “Doug War” Shepard (Blackwolfgoat, Black Pyramid, Roadsaw, Slapshot, Slaughtershack, Supahead, Headcleaner) and Zephyn “Blotex” Courtney (Stompbox, Milligram, Chevy Heston, Juliana Hatfield, Diehard, Snap!).
